The Novi Middle School Theater Company strives to provide a friendly and supportive environment inside which students can try their hand in the world of acting and stagecraft. Many of our actors and technicians have little to no experience in the realm of theater and it is our goal to provide them with a positive theater experience so that they may determine whether this is something they may enjoy as an extra curricular activity, or even as a carrier some day. For our returning and or experienced members, we work to provide them with a path conducive to the continuing development of their theatrical talents.
What We Do
Novi Middle School Theater Company has been putting on shows for almost a decade now. Most of that time has been under the Direction of Novi Schools Teacher Lori Burkhardt, with support from her friends, family, and colleges. Each show also involves the support of many parent and student volunteers. We thank all of your for your continued support of our program.
From auditions to "[lights, curtain,] action!," we work to maintain and healthy, supportive, and effective atmosphere for theatrical development. A season will begin with tryouts where students will audition in the Middle School Auditorium in front of our Director, and a few volunteers from the school district. These tryouts are held behind closed doors and the proceedings of each student's individual audition are not discussed with anyone not involved in the selection process. Students will all audition from the same set of lines that will be pre-selected by our director. Our panel of volunteers will place students in one or more roles that they feel fits the students abilities and comfort level.
Once the cast is assembled, rehearsals begin and usually last around 4 - 6 weeks. Our rehearsals begin with simple read-throughs with the cast, then progress to scene by scene blocking (placement on the stage at a given time), followed by choreography and off-script rehearsals, and - before you know it - it's show night.
Through the whole season, our directing team and experienced volunteers will guide students so that they will be ready and comfortable for their big moment on show night.
The next and more "secretive" part of our organization is made up by our technical staff. We are proud to say that the final and polished show that you will see on show night is entirely student run. This is not just the acting, but the lighting, sound, and backstage work too. Our student "techies" are all Novi Middle School students that embark on 1 - 2 weeks of training, led by our technical director and assisted by Novi Community School District Auditorium Event Staff. All our "techies" receive basic training in lighting setup and operation, audio setup and operation, as well as backstage safety proceedings and management. Students are then assigned to either lighting, sound, or backstage roles for that show, where they will have a hand in designing the A/V effects which they will put on behind the scenes on show night.
